Payout schemes (MIS, SCSS) are ranked as if each payout were reinvested at the same rate, so they can be compared fairly. PPF and SSY are not in the table because they work on yearly deposits; see the cards above for what their tax-free rate is worth.

Post Office schemes vs bank products

Compare a POSB scheme with 10 banks, including senior-citizen rates and monthly-income payout proxies. Rates are indicative; verify before investing.

SCHEME-WISE

Provider / productComparison basisRateIllustrative return / payoutValue / principalAfter-tax estimateDifference vs Post Office (MIS: monthly payout gap × months)
Important: this compares eligible Post Office schemes to the closest bank product, not always an equivalent product. PPF and SSY are deliberately excluded here because their government-set rates apply across institutions. SCSS is the same government scheme when opened through an authorised bank or Post Office, so its rate is shown identically across providers. Banks do not offer direct equivalents to NSC or KVP; those comparisons are proxies and do not reproduce their tax treatment, eligibility, government backing, lock-in or payout rules. Monthly-interest bank FD rates may be discounted from the cumulative FD rate by the bank. Rates below include representative published FD rates screened in October 2026; where the exact product/tenor is not directly comparable, rates are labelled as estimates or proxies and must be verified with the bank before investing. Tax is a simplified slab estimate; TDS, cess, deductions, premature-closure penalties and exact day-count rules are excluded.

Debt funds are not deposits: NAV can fall, returns are not guaranteed and there is no DICGC deposit insurance. Longer-duration funds are more sensitive to interest-rate changes. Estimates use a user-adjustable assumed return; the comparison applies the selected tax slab simplistically and is not a precise tax calculation.

Sources & method

How the numbers are worked out.

Scheme rates are those notified by the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, for 1 October – 31 December 2026 (unchanged from July – September 2026). Bank rates are representative published retail deposit rates checked against official bank pages available in October 2026; where a bank does not publish a directly comparable product/tenor, the table explicitly labels a proxy.

How each scheme is estimated

  • TD: compounded quarterly. NSC: compounded yearly, paid at maturity. KVP: doubles in 115 months at the current rate.
  • RD: deposits at the start of each month, interest on each month's balance, added to the balance every quarter.
  • MIS / SCSS: interest is paid out monthly / quarterly and not reinvested; principal returns at maturity.
  • PPF / SSY: yearly deposits, interest on the lowest monthly balance and credited at year end. SSY deposits run for 15 years and the account matures at 21 years. Both rates are reviewed every quarter, so future years may differ.
  • After tax: interest is taxed at your slab every year and the rest is reinvested. PPF and SSY interest is tax-free. Surcharge, cess, TDS and deduction limits are ignored.
  • Effective yield: the single yearly rate that would turn your deposits into the final amount, so schemes with different payment patterns can be compared.
These are planning estimates. Actual maturity amounts follow scheme rules, rounding and deposit dates. Do not quote them as official maturity values.
Updating next quarter: change the dates and rates in the CFG, S and B lists at the top of the script. Nothing else needs editing.
